Ice maker water line installation is a fairly simple task that everyone can complete in an hour or two if they have a little knowledge and the right set of tools. However, there are a few things that can go awry and cause damage to your home if not done properly. Even some special installation kits and tools can lead you in the wrong direction, causing leaks in the future.
Installing an ice maker water line is an easy job to do by yourself. In the past, you could only use a ¼” copper pipe to connect the ice maker to the nearest source of water, these days there are ¼” flex pipes that come in different lengths from 1’ to 20’ that you can use to connect to any water source. You only need to calculate how far your water line will need to be run in order to buy the pipe with the right length.
Most people run water lines through their cabinets and over the refrigerator, but if that is not possible, then you might have to look at running the line through the floor. Most modern ice makers have a supply valve, which makes running an external ice maker water line easy.
If your ice maker have a water supply
All you will need to do is to buy a short 1/4″ by 1/4” flex line and connect it to the back of the ice maker and then to the source of water. Once you have done that turn the water on and check for any leaks along the line.
If your ice maker don’t have a water supply
If you need to add a water supply use either a new 3-way angle stops or add a tee. There are Adapt-A-Tees that are available from most plumbing stores that you can use. They are quick to install and require less work than most.
Here are a few steps that you can follow to install a new ice maker water line when there is no water supply:
- Locate the angle stop around or under the sink area where you will be tying the line. Close the faucet and shut off water to the angle stop.
- Make sure that you disconnect the flex line running from the angle stop. You might have to use two sets of pliers to remove the line safely. One plier should be used to attach the angle stop and hold it in place, and the other should be used to unscrew the flex line.
- You can now attach the Tee Adapter. The adapter should connect to the water stop valve and it should be sized to fit the valve. The important thing is to make sure that the outlet has ¼” OD.
- Tighten the Adapt-A-Tee to the angle stop. Tighten it as much as you can and use a wrench if you have to but be careful not to move the angle stop whilst you are tightening.
- Reconnect the water supply line to the 3/8” end of the Adapt-A Tee. Hold the tee as you tighten the line connection.
- Connect the ¼” flex line to the tee and tighten.
To connect the flex line running from the water source these are the steps you should follow:
- Take the other end of the ¼” flex line and connect that to the ice maker. Tighten it using pliers to make sure that there are no leakages at that end.
- Once the connections to the stop valve under your sink have been secured, open the taps on and run water through.
- Check for leaks at all the connection points and along the line. If there are no leaks, your ice maker water line was successfully run and you can now put the ice maker back. You will have to let the water run through the ice maker or water dispenser (if you have one). You will need to do this to flush the line and dispenser clean as well as to remove any air trapped along the line. Use the water dispenser to do this. If you do not have a water dispenser you need to throw out the first full batch of ice that comes through the ice dispenser to make sure that the ice is clean.
